While the intentions behind performative compassion may vary, it often lacks the depth and authenticity that true compassion embodies.


In the age of social media, performative compassion can be particularly prevalent. People might post about social issues, share charitable activities, or use hashtags related to causes without actively engaging in meaningful actions or introspection. This sounds good in some ways as it might help to raise awareness of certain causes, but this type of compassion can inadvertently undermine the very empathy and support it seeks to project.


True compassion involves genuinely caring for others, understanding their struggles, and taking meaningful actions to alleviate their suffering. It's about empathy, active listening, and making a difference, even if it's in small ways. On the other hand, performative compassion runs the risk of inadvertently trivializing the challenges others face by reducing their experiences to mere tokens of social recognition or popular activism for only a short window of time not sustained long-term action, which is what tends to win the battle for social change.
