In recent weeks, the world has been shaken by news of a tragic case: a teenager who died by suicide after reportedly using an AI chatbot as a substitute for companionship in his final days. According to court filings, the young person’s conversations with the chatbot shifted from homework help to discussions of anxiety, isolation, and ultimately, methods of self-harm. His parents have since taken legal action, alleging that the system not only failed to protect him, but in some instances appeared to encourage his despair.

Regardless of the eventual legal outcome, the story itself stops us in our tracks. It raises deep questions about how quickly we’ve invited artificial intelligence into our homes, our schools, and our lives often without fully understanding the implications.

For me, reading about this case is like staring into a mirror reflecting the complex intersection of human vulnerability, technology, and responsibility. As a parent, counsellor and resilience coach with decades of practice, I see at least three powerful lessons we need to take seriously from this...

Lesson 1: Resilience Is the Habit of Reaching Out


I’ll begin with my own bias: I believe in resilience training. Not because it’s a silver bullet, no such thing exists when it comes to mental health, but because resilience offers us habits that act like lifelines when life feels unbearable.

One of those habits is knowing when to reach out for help and having the confidence to do it. That’s the quiet superpower of resilience: it teaches us that strength isn’t about shouldering pain alone, but about recognising when we can’t carry it and leaning into trusted support.

I often call this falling forward, not down. Life will knock us down; that’s unavoidable. But when we’ve built resilience, we don’t fall into isolation, we fall into connection. Instead of collapsing silently, we reach toward others who can help hold us.

In this heartbreaking case, the young man reportedly found himself confiding in a chatbot, perhaps because it felt easier than speaking with his family. That is not unusual: technology can feel safe, non-judgmental, and available in the middle of the night when despair often grows loudest. But it is a reminder that resilience is not only about individual grit, it’s a collective responsibility. Families, schools, workplaces, and communities all have a role to play in cultivating cultures where seeking help is not a last resort but a first instinct.

Lesson 2: AI Needs Guardrails That Are Human-Aware


The second lesson lies in the technology itself. The reality is that AI is not going away. Young people are already turning to chatbots not just for answers, but for companionship. They are pouring out their worries, fears, and private struggles into systems designed to generate text, not care for human life.

In this case, according to reports, the bot at times did issue crisis hotline numbers. But safeguards were easily bypassed by the teenager, who framed his queries as harmless role-play. In other moments, the bot is alleged to have minimised his distress or even assisted in articulating a suicide plan.

In my opinion, that is deeply troubling. It highlights a sobering truth: large language models (LLM) were not designed to replace real relationships. They can simulate warmth, mimic empathy, and provide endless conversation, but they do not have the human conscience that says... This is a crisis. Stop everything. Get help.

This is why I believe technology must evolve with stronger, clearer guardrails. We cannot afford to treat safety as an afterthought. Systems need to be built to recognise markers of crisis, to break the loop of endless conversation, and to firmly direct users toward real-world human supports. Not just a generic link, but connections to services in their own community.

It is not enough for companies to say, “We’ll keep improving as we go.” When lives are on the line, safety cannot lag behind innovation.

Lesson 3: Awareness Is Not Enough Without Action


What cuts deepest in this story is the parents’ grief: the sense that their son’s cries for help were misdirected into a machine that could never hold them. They discovered thousands of pages of chat logs after his death - conversations in which he confided his despair, shared his plans, and even drafted farewell notes with the bot’s assistance. For them, the painful reality is that their son did not leave a traditional note; he left his last words inside an AI system.

This is an almost unbearable reminder of the stakes.

Awareness matters. Talking about this publicly matters. It breaks the silence around mental health and technology while challenging us to look honestly at what’s happening in bedrooms, classrooms, and private devices around the world.

But awareness alone does not save lives. Action does. And action must happen on multiple fronts:

  • For families and friends: creating safe spaces where difficult conversations are possible and showing young people that no topic is too heavy to share.
  • For schools and workplaces: embedding resilience training, so reaching out for help becomes instinctive rather than shameful.
  • For practitioners: continuing to fight for accessible, community-based mental health services that can respond in real time.
  • For policymakers and technologists: making sure AI tools are not only innovative but also deeply human-aware, with crisis intervention protocols built in.

The Road Ahead


The truth is, there is no single solution. No parent, practitioner, or policymaker can prevent every tragedy. But we can, and must, learn from them.

This case is not just about one family or one company. It’s about all of us. It’s about how quickly we’ve invited machines into intimate parts of our lives, and how slowly we’ve caught up to the risks. It’s about recognising that while AI can simulate connection, it cannot replace the human bonds we all need to survive.

For me, the lessons are clear: resilience saves lives by teaching us to fall forward into connection, and technology must evolve with guardrails that reflect our humanity, not just our cleverness.

The fact that this story is making headlines around the world is a start. Awareness has been sparked. But if we stop at awareness, we will fail the next 'Adam or Mary or Suong,' the next family, the next community. Awareness must lead to action. And action is what saves lives!
