The old saying 'you are what you eat' is truer then many of us want to admit...
But it is not all just about our waste line. Did you know that the food that goes into your mouth can make a huge difference to how you think? So if you have a big day at the office then be sure to eat up for your brain:
Celery: Celery has a secret called luteolin, a plant compound that is said to lower the rates of age-related memory loss. What it (Luteolin) does is help to calm inflammation in the brain, which doctors and scientists alike now believe to be the primary cause of neuro-degeneration (that is the slow death of our brain).
Honey: Mix it in your tea or have it on some bread it is a fantastic natural energizer. A teaspoon of honey in a chai tea will give you the same kick as a strong black coffee and will do more to enhance the power
Chia Seeds: These little guys pack a powerful punch - high in protein and rich in omega 3 fatty acids, these are the fats we use to oil the body and mind. They also help control blood sugar levels, aid in hydrating the body, and contain a good source of antioxidants. Not to mention they are one of the best sources of fiber in the world (and we all know how good it feels to be clean on the inside).
Dark Chocolate: Yeap I wrote chocolate, but not all chocolate is created equal. Quality dark chocolate does have some significant health benefits. It’s rich in fiber, Iron and Magnesium, the flavonols in dark chocolate improve blood vessel function, which improves blood flow to the brain and in doing so improves cognitive function and memory. Plus it will give you a buzz like a cup of coffee as it holds similar stimulant properties to that of caffeine.
Nuts: Nuts, especially walnuts, are extremely good for the brain and nervous system. So for an office draw snack some roasted nuts (with little if any flavors, including salt) is the best thing to have. They are a good source of omega three fatty acids and contain vitamin E, which has been shown to prevent many forms of dementia by protecting the brain from free radicals. So grab a handful three times a day and enjoy thinking straight!
Fruit: Of course snacking away on fruit throughout the day not only helps hydrate the body but also gives you natural sugar.
So add a few of these to your daily consumption and enjoy some of the other indulgence as ‘sometimes food’…
